Cannabis Induced Psychosis: Recent Trends in Cannabis Use

Cannabis is one of the most widely used substances in the United States, second only to tobacco and alcohol. Millions of Americans, many of them teenagers, regularly use cannabis. While legalization has expanded access, it has also brought about significant concerns.

Recent studies have revealed alarming trends associated with cannabis use:
• Increased mental health risks: Cannabis has been linked to a rise in anxiety, paranoia, and psychosis-related hospitalizations, particularly among young people.
• Early-onset schizophrenia: Cannabis use can accelerate the onset of schizophrenia by up to three years.
• Expanded spectrum of psychotic disorders: Cannabis has been associated with an increased risk of various psychotic disorders, including schizoaffective disorder, schizophreniform disorder, brief psychotic disorder, delusional disorder, and substance-induced psychotic disorder.
• Bipolar disorder: Cannabis may contribute to the development of bipolar disorder with psychotic features and the onset of manic symptoms.

These findings underscore the need for a deeper understanding of the potential risks associated with cannabis use, especially among young people. This training will provide a comprehensive overview about the growing trends and issues related to cannabis use.
