Disenfranchised Grief: The Shadowed Losses of Overdose and Suicide

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: The nation’s mental health crisis and opioid overdose epidemic have given rise to unprecedented mortality rates due to suicide and overdose. The far-reaching consequences have continued to reverberate throughout communities, resulting in a devastating impact upon individuals and families. This workshop will address the nuances of disenfranchised grief in addition to offering direction to behavioral healthcare workers on how to best provide support to families and individuals impacted by these losses.  

 

Onsite at Futures Recovery Healthcare from 10am–12pm with lunch and networking to follow.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Participants will be able to–
a. Differentiate Grief from Disenfranchised Grief.
b. Better understand the impact of stigma on the grieving process.
c. Understand the relationship between Prolonged Grief Disorder and Disenfranchised Grief.
d. Understand current best practices in providing therapeutic and support services to individuals impacted by disenfranchised grief

PRESENTED BY ERIC BRICKER:

Eric Bricker is an accomplished South Florida psychotherapist and behavioral health consultant, currently in private practice since 2007 and specializing in the treatment of trauma, substance misuse, grief and loss, and anger management. Eric began working as a therapist in 1995 and has worked in a diverse range of clinical capacities including community mental health, residential addictions treatment, Native American behavioral healthcare administration and private practice. Eric also provides behavioral health program consultation and counselor training. He has taught at the graduate school level and provides specialty clinical training, as well as independent supervision for counselors seeking licensure. Eric is also the creator and host of the Good Counsel Podcast, a podcast that highlights the work of exceptional individuals in the field of behavioral healthcare.  


Credentials: Licensed Mental Health Counselor, EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist, Certified in Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories (RTM), Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, Certified Anger Management Specialist, Board Certified Addictions Professional, Qualified Supervisor for MHC Interns.
