Spravato Treatment

What Is Spravato Therapy?

Spravato (esketamine) CIII nasal spray is an FDA-approved medication for adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) or major depressive disorder (MDD) with acute suicidal ideation or behavior.

Unlike traditional antidepressants that target serotonin or norepinephrine, Spravato works on the glutamate system, offering a novel mechanism of action and faster symptom relief.

Available only at certified treatment centers like Futures Recovery Healthcare, Spravato is administered in a safe, private environment with continuous monitoring and luxury-level care through our MetaVida Program.

Who Is Spravato For?

Spravato may be recommended for adults who:

  • Have tried at least two oral antidepressants without sufficient improvement
  • Experience persistent, severe depressive symptoms
  • Struggle with suicidal thoughts despite ongoing treatment
  • Prefer a medically supervised, innovative approach to mood regulation

How Spravato Works?

Spravato is a self-administered nasal spray taken under direct supervision at our outpatient suite. It stimulates glutamate receptors in the brain, which may help restore synaptic connections and support faster mood stabilization.

Most patients begin to experience improvement within 24 to 48 hours of their first dose.

Spravato is not a replacement for hospitalization when urgent psychiatric intervention is needed, but rather a powerful option in a continuum of structured outpatient care.

Induction Phase (Weeks 1–4)

  • 2 sessions per week
  • Designed to quickly reduce symptoms and stabilize mood

Maintenance Phase I (Weeks 5–8)

  • 1 session per week
  • Consolidates gains from initial dosing and monitors progress

Maintenance Phase II (Week 9 and beyond)

  • Every 1–2 weeks
  • Personalized based on clinical response and provider discretion

Patients are observed onsite for at least 2 hours following each session. You may not drive or operate heavy machinery for the rest of the day following treatment.

What to Expect During a Spravato Session

Your Spravato appointments in Futures are designed with comfort, privacy, and safety in mind. Here’s how it works:

  • Arrival & Preparation: Pre-treatment screening and vitals check
  • Administration: You self-administer the nasal spray under medical supervision
  • Monitoring: You remain in a calming environment for 2+ hours for safety and evaluation
  • Discharge: Transportation must be arranged, as driving post-treatment is prohibited until the following day

Safety, Monitoring & Side Effects

Due to potential side effects such as dissociation, dizziness, sedation, and blood pressure elevation, Spravato is only available through REMS-certified providers, like Futures.

Common short-term side effects include:

  • Mild dissociation or a “disconnected” feeling
  • Drowsiness or fatigue
  • Nausea or dizziness
  • Temporary increase in blood pressure

These typically resolve on the same day. Patients are monitored throughout their stay and discharged only when clinically appropriate.
