Medically Supervised Detoxification

The symptoms of active substance use and mental health conditions can make it hard to engage in treatment productively. Achieving mental and physical stabilization and safely reducing drug and alcohol levels in the body establishes a baseline from which treatment providers can accurately assess patient needs.

Detoxification can be an essential step in achieving medical stability and removing substances from one’s system before beginning additional treatment. Most people who have become dependent upon substances experience mental and physical discomfort when they stop using them. Sudden cessation of alcohol and benzodiazepine poses an exceptionally high risk because side-effects of withdrawal from these substances can become life-threatening. It is important for experienced medical doctors to take an accurate addiction history to determine if detoxification is required.

Rise at Futures patients have access to medically-supervised detoxification that sets the stage for a successful treatment experience. Patients receive a psychiatric evaluation, complete medical and addiction histories, full physical, and additional testing to determine if detoxification is required, and to help in the development of an individualized care plan after detoxification.

Futures’ Chief Medical Officer, Gloria Dunkin, MD, is an addiction psychiatrist with significant detoxification experience. Dr. Dunkin and her team of nurses ensure that patients receive any necessary medications to facilitate safe detox, and closely supervise the detoxification process. Fully-equipped Futures Recovery Healthcare medical service suites give patients and caregivers the environment and equipment needed to make the detoxification process as safe and comfortable as possible.
