Group therapy at Orenda

Neuropsychology and Psychotherapy

Orenda understands the toll that mental health and substance use disorders can take on every aspect of personal, family, and professional life. Our programming provides the time, personal attention, breadth, and resources needed to holistically address mind, body, and spirit, and to get the most from one’s treatment experience. Orenda gives patients access to a wide array of assessments and evidence-based treatments and helps them learn to manage triggers to develop the overall health, wellness, and resilience to support lasting recovery.

Testing and assessment for more informed care

When it comes to making healthcare more effective, actionable data can make all the difference. The more our healthcare providers know about our overall health, the better they can target therapies and give advice. At Orenda, we use the results of testing and assessments to identify previously undiagnosed conditions and deliver highly individualized care. We can also share these insights with a patient’s primary care doctors, specialists, and other healthcare providers so every member of a patient’s healthcare team can see a more complete and more informative picture of their overall health. Orenda gives patients to access a more extensive battery of personalized physiological, neuropsychological, genomic, and nutritional assessments than they are likely to find anywhere else.

Neuropsychological testing

Long-term misuse of alcohol and drugs can have profound effects on physiology and brain function. Understanding the extent to which one’s medical, addiction, and trauma histories may affect their cognitive function and overall health lends important clues to treatment providers and improves their ability to provide effective therapies.

Neuropsychological testing uses an array of physical and cognitive assessments to determine the relationship between brain and behavior, identify neurocognitive strengths and challenges, and examine overall psychiatric functioning. At Orenda, a leading neuropsychologist personalizes a regime of analytics that typically requires a full day to complete. Through the use of histories, interviewing techniques, cognitive and physiological tests, symptom rating scales, and medical tests and imaging, the neuropsychologist is able to establish an in-depth profile. Every pertinent aspect of cognitive health including brain function, IQ, executive functioning, personality traits, memory function, concentration and attention, reasoning skills, sensory perception, motor skills, structural neurology, and psychiatric functioning are evaluated.

The benefits of a detailed neuropsychological evaluation in the treatment of substance use and mental health conditions cannot be overstated. The findings from this testing can identify problems that might be otherwise elusive in the course of standard evaluation and treatment. This type of testing can uncover seemingly innocuous and treatable underlying conditions such as hearing or vision loss, cognitive impairments, or fine motor issues that can exacerbate symptoms, reduce one’s quality of life, and can often go unnoticed.

Psychiatrists, primary care physicians, psychologists, physical therapists, and other medical specialists armed with the findings of a neuropsychological evaluation have a great deal more information than usual with which to effectively address a range of whole-health issues.

Immersion Therapy

Orenda appropriately exposes patients to the types of challenges they may face after leaving treatment to test skills and build resilience. Learning to support recovery while navigating a late-night private business dinner, post-round clubhouse celebration, or charity ball setting, can increase one’s chances of maintaining sobriety. There is also the ability to process those environments and emotions clinically and develop solutions and relapse prevention tools in real-time. Traditional residential programs typically do not allow for simulation and immersion in high trigger environments.

Clinical Neuropsychology and Psychotherapy

Neuropsychology assesses brain function to identify needs and inform care. Substance misuse and the side effects of active addiction can impact multiple areas of brain function and performance. Orenda uses neuropsychological testing to assess intellectual functioning, memory function, attention, concentration, and executive function. Available neuroimaging, such as EEGs and brain maps may also be evaluated as part of neuropsychological testing.

Psychotherapy is a mainstay of addiction and mental health treatment. Insights gleaned from neuropsychological evaluations are incorporated into patient psychoeducation and psychotherapy care plans.

Orenda patients receive intensive individual and group therapy. Orenda therapists are experts in multiple psychotherapy modalities and take a flexible approach that can make treatment more comfortable and productive.
